Distractions (well, a few)

I’ve kept this site very centered on games and not on me. This post changes that dynamic entirely, because it’s all about me. If you followed the site February through March when I was posting a number of articles and reviews, you may have wondered why my postings dropped off so precipitously in the last several months.

I started this website in January. Somewhat of a poor timing choice on my part. In January, I decided to do a 3,300-mile, 48-day cross-country ride from June 21 to August 7th in support of the American Lung Association. My grandfather died of black lung disease from working in coal mines, so the cause means a lot to me. And the opportunity to see the country from Seattle to Washington D.C. on smaller state roads from a bike seat seemed like a great way to be off the grid and process what to do next since the contract with my employer was up in the summer anyway. And just to add another layer of madness, I concurrently decided to move to another city. After six years in New York City, I want a more laid back pace of living.

So needless to say, the end of winter and the spring were filled with long training rides, job searching in multiple cities, and working out the logistics of where to store my stuff and how to move it after my final destination was determined. Nonetheless, because I was in such a productive life-changing mode, I decided to start pursuing my dream of having a toe in video game journalism. I figured that I would at least be able to get the site up and running and start practicing with some articles and reviews. I hoped that I could post more articles in spring and even play and review some games on the ride, but time was too short with my other major life events. And now that I’ve been on the ride for two weeks, I can tell you that riding 83 miles a day on average takes quite a bit out of you. But at least I met my minimum goal of getting the website set up and posting some articles and reviews so I can start finding my journalistic voice (as it were).

As my body adjusts to the rigorous schedule, however, I am finally starting to have a few more minutes here and there to myself. So, i hope to start catching up with the news, posting some commentary on it, and possibly even playing some portable games for review. I’ll get up what I can when I can over the next five more weeks of the ride. Today I had an opportunity to write this because we have a day off in Billings, Montana on July 4th.

In the meantime, if you want to make a donation to the American Lung Association to further their efforts of researching causes of lung disease and taking actions to address them, go to my fundraising page: https://www.mrsnv.com/evt/e01/part.jsp?id=2866&acct=9001320722&rid=0
